BBAW: The Power of a Blog
It’s Book Blogger Appreciation Week and the organizers posted a list of daily topics. Today the idea is to spotlight a favorite blog that didn’t make the shortlist for BBAW awards this year.
Blogs that carry book reviews come in all shapes and sizes. I decided to take today’s prompt to showcase one of the largest. In particular I wanted to showcase the power a blog can have. Before I point you at the blog I want to share with you one of my favorite sources for free online speculative fiction. That would be Strange Horizons. For pretty much the last decade SH has (every week) offered up original ficiton, poetry, artwork, reviews and commentary on speculative fiction. They pay professional rates for their stories and are funded by donations.
Here’s where my mystery blogger enters the picture. I’ve blogged about the unique way he reviews books. I never miss one of those posts and continuously return to them as reference. When this year’s Strange Horizon’s fund drive started it looked as if the general economic down turn was going to leave them quite short. So for a generous 27 hour day (almost exactly a month ago) one blogger offered to match donations up to $500. After the days donations were tallied, $9590 (not including the matching $500) had been raised, which was significantly more than the goal for the fund drive. I recommend, if you’re not already one of the many people addicted to his blog that you check out:
I’ve linked to a search for “Strange Horizons” on his blog so that you can read the story for yourself. And the feature I mentioned earlier is called The Big Idea. My write up on it is a good introduction to the concept.
